Artist Bio
Lord Huron is a musical and visual project created by Ben Schneider. Originally a solo project, collaborators now include Mark Barry (percussion, vocals), Miguel Briseno (bass, percussion) and Tom Renaud (guitar, vocals). Ben Schneider was born in Michigan and started playing music as a child. He studied art in college and lived in France and New York before moving to Los Angeles in 2005 to pursue a career in the visual arts. In May 2010, Schneider traveled home to Michigan and spent a week on the shores of Lake Huron. There at the lake, where many of his formative experiences had come to pass, Schneider recorded the three songs that would comprise the Into the Sun EP. He released the EP online in June and dispersed a small number of CDs complete with h is own artwork. Lord Hurons first live show was in August 2010. Schneid er released his second EP, Mighty, in November 2010. The band toured heavily in 2011, continuing to deve lop a live show. In January 2012, Lord Huron signed with independent la bel, IAMSOUND Records. The first full-length album from Lord Huron, Lonesome Dreams was released in September 2012.
JAMES APOLLO
James Apollo strikes an eerie chord across a lonely American landscape, mixing the exotic 60s rocknrolll with a cinematic view of the western frontier. The groups formation is the stuff of legend: driving on Highway 62 outside Joshua Tree, James Apollo and Noah Strom spotted a hearse that Apollo was sure belonged to Jack Chandelier, a percussionist he had crossed paths with in Seattle. Indeed it was, and with the addition of fellow hearse passenger and Matt Palin on bass, they determined to chase that highway to the end of the line.
James Apollo exemplifies this wandering, exotic sense of danger on his latest recording, "Angelorum.”
The record transports one to a world where vibraphones and flutes dance intermittently with Apollos raspy cry on the big-beated track "White Lines." And what could easily be a soft bossanova rallies to anthemic levels on the single "Spinnin." Its a big, bold, sound, but Apollo is not all shout and swagger. The records title track, "Angelorum" came from a sign he saw painted on the side of a building in Mexico. "I liked the sound of it. Later our piano player told me what it meant and i couldnt have been more elated."
Its a lot of strange sentiment, and it fits. "Angelorum" is indicative of Apollos distinctive talent, and with its catharsis of fiery anthems and cool, cool delivery, James Apollo proves that American landscape is a little less lonely.
"dark delights with a ghoulish air of danger."
4 stars.
